Have you tried 7-zip? It supports a new open-source compression algorithm, 7z, the compression ratios are far greater than WinRAR, even better, it's Free :)
The only downside of 7-zip is that it doesn't support RAR...it can DECOMPRESS *.rar files, but it can't compress to *.rar...probably since WinRar owns rights to that "format".
But it will allow compressing to *.zip in Ultra mode that is comparable to RAR compression anyways :)
